Terms of Service
Last updated: June 2026
These Terms of Service govern your use of Plain Lab. By accessing or using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
The short version
Plain Lab is a free, educational tool that turns lab results into plain-English explanations using AI. It is not a medical service. By using Plain Lab you confirm you are at least 18 years old, you understand that the explanations are generated entirely by AI without human review, and that nothing on this site is medical advice or a diagnosis.
Eligibility (18+ or parental consent)
You must be at least 18 years old, or between 13 and 17 with the verifiable consent of a parent or legal guardian, to use Plain Lab. If you are under 13, you may not use the service. By using Plain Lab you represent and warrant that you meet this age requirement or have obtained the required parental consent.
The service
Plain Lab lets you upload or paste laboratory test results and receive an automatically generated, plain-language explanation of those values. PDF text extraction runs in your browser; image text extraction is processed securely by our AI provider. Only the extracted text is sent over HTTPS, solely to generate the explanation. The service is offered on an as-available basis and may be modified, suspended, or discontinued at any time, with reasonable notice where appropriate.
Not medical advice
PLAIN LAB IS NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE, IS NOT FDA CLEARED, IS NOT INTENDED FOR DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, OR CLINICAL DECISION-MAKING, IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL ADVICE, AND DOES NOT CREATE ANY DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP. The explanations are educational only and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or out of date. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read on Plain Lab. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your doctor or your local emergency number immediately. All decisions about your health must be made with a qualified healthcare professional who knows your full medical history.
AI-generated output
All explanations are generated entirely by an artificial intelligence model (currently provided by Anthropic, PBC). No licensed medical professional reviews your results or the output. AI output can be wrong, omit relevant context, misread a value, or 'hallucinate' information that looks plausible but is incorrect. You are solely responsible for evaluating the accuracy and appropriateness of any output before acting on it. Plain Lab makes no warranty that the output will be accurate, complete, current, reliable, or suitable for any particular purpose, including any medical purpose.
Acceptable use
You agree not to: (a) upload laboratory results or other personal health data that belong to another individual without that person's explicit, informed consent; (b) use the service to provide, simulate, or intermediate medical care to others; (c) reverse engineer, scrape, systematically extract, or commercially resell output from the service, or otherwise interfere with the service or its underlying providers; (d) use the service to violate any law or third-party right; (e) submit malware, attempt to gain unauthorized access, or impose unreasonable load on our infrastructure; or (f) use the service in any jurisdiction where doing so would be illegal.
No account required
Plain Lab does not require registration or authentication. You are responsible for the device and browser you use, for any content you submit, and for keeping your own copies of any explanations you wish to retain — we do not store them for you.
Subscriptions, billing & auto-renewal
Plain Lab offers a free tier that allows up to 3 analyses per day. A Premium subscription is available for $9 per month and includes additional features. Subscriptions are billed in advance through Stripe. UNLESS YOU CANCEL, YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW for successive periods at the then-current price, and your payment method will be charged at the start of each renewal period. We may change prices on a going-forward basis with reasonable advance notice; the new price applies to your next renewal. You may cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period and you retain access until then.
Cancellation & refunds
Except where required by applicable consumer-protection law, all fees are non-refundable and we do not provide refunds for used periods or pro-rated refunds for partial periods. If a charge was clearly made in error (for example, you were billed after cancelling), contact support@plainlab.ai and we will investigate in good faith. Any statutory right of withdrawal or cooling-off period available to you under your local law is not waived by this section.
Intellectual property
Plain Lab, including its software, design, text, and trademarks, is owned by Plain Lab and its licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. You retain all rights in the lab results and other content you submit. You grant Plain Lab a limited, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to process that content for the sole purpose of operating the service and generating your explanation. The explanation produced for you is yours to use for personal, non-commercial purposes; you may not resell it or present it as medical advice from Plain Lab.
Suspension & termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to all or part of the service at any time, with or without notice, including if we believe you have breached these Terms or used the service in a way that creates risk for us, for other users, or for third parties. You may stop using the service at any time. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including the medical disclaimer, warranty disclaimer, limitation of liability, indemnity, and governing law — will survive.
Disclaimer of warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE. PLAIN LAB DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE AI OUTPUT IS ACCURATE, COMPLETE, CURRENT, OR APPROPRIATE FOR ANY MEDICAL PURPOSE.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, PLAIN LAB AND ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, AND SUPPLIERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUES, DATA, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE — INCLUDING ANY HEALTH DECISION MADE OR DELAYED ON THE BASIS OF AN EXPLANATION. PLAIN LAB'S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO PLAIN LAB IN THE 3 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) USD 10. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THESE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Plain Lab and its affiliates, officers, employees, and agents from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to (a) your use of the service, (b) your violation of these Terms, (c) your violation of any law or third-party right, or (d) any decision made by you or any third party on the basis of an explanation generated through the service.
Governing law & venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States of America, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The exclusive venue for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the service is the state or federal courts located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. For users resident in Brazil, mandatory provisions of the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code (Lei 8.078/1990) and of the LGPD apply, and the courts of the District of São Paulo (Foro Central da Comarca de São Paulo) have jurisdiction over disputes governed by those statutes. Nothing in this section deprives a consumer of mandatory protections under the law of their country of residence.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The 'Last updated' date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. For material changes, we will provide at least 30 days' advance notice via email to the address associated with your subscription, if any, and by updating the 'Last updated' date. Your continued use of the service after a change takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
